US-based packaging supply store Complete Design & Packaging (CDP) has invested in automation engine software from Esko.

Esko supplies integrated hardware and software for customers in the label, packaging and wide format sectors.

Earlier, CDP invested in hardware, including Esko Kongsberg C64 digital cutting table, to handle complex print runs with quality and consistency, and recognised the need to add new software technology.

Merging of digital finishing technology with Esko automation engine prepress software has streamlined the workflow, accelerated throughput, and reduced rework and energy use in the process.

Automation engine software digitalised CDP’s products and automated prepress tasks

CDP president Howard Bertram said: “The additional production potential had unlocked workflow efficiency gains but the process had become unbalanced, creating a need for further enhancement of prepress capabilities.

“The table was so fast; we were trying to find work for us to do to keep up with it. I’d put a job on it and before I knew it, it was done. I found myself searching for things to cut to keep the table running – it was that fast.”

As a result of the investment, CDP expects to achieve high productivity and balance the processes without increasing the operators.

Bertram added: “Most corrugated companies don’t handle prepress in-house, they rely on their flexo print plate suppliers.

“Automation Engine software has helped us set a new standard for prepress workflow, speeding up our processes and minimising the need for operator intervention.”

The proper combination of hardware and software has enabled CDP to digitalise products, automate prepress tasks and normalise the workflow, resulting in a quick, efficient way of work and reduced administrative prepress errors.

Esko marketing director Jan De Roeck said: “Digitalisation transformation and automation is the direction the print and packaging industry is moving towards.

“CDP is committed to aligning with that mentality through continuous investment in the latest technologies available and by working together we can ensure production capacity is optimised without compromising on efficiency and quality.”

Earlier this year, India-based label convertor KEM Cards invested in integrated Esko hardware and software solutions to bring digital flexo process in-house.
