Canada-based packaging company Cascades has launched a new isothermal packaging technology and inaugurated a new production site in York, Pennsylvania.

As part of its expansion plan in the isothermal packaging market, the firm launched the northbox XTEND which is said to be 20% more efficient than its current home delivery solution.

According to Cascades, the food box’s composition produces a moisture barrier, which helps keep the insulation rigid.

Furthermore, the packaging keeps food fresh for longer travel durations and in hotter climates while requiring less ice.

The company said that the solution was created with the circular economy in mind and is made of recycled cardboard that has been verified to be recyclable by an independent laboratory and prequalified by How2Recycle.

The northbox XTEND is a new addition to the extensive and configurable northbox portfolio, designed to provide clients with operational benefits.

The firm also inaugurated its newest manufacturing facility for northbox product range: Cascades Enviropac – York.

This is Cascades’ second plant in four months to support the company’s expansion in the isothermal packaging solutions sector. The firm opened its first site in Tacoma, US.

The initial phase of the expansion includes the installation of an automated packaging line for the production of its isothermal boxes, including the new northbox XTEND.

Cascades Specialty Products Group president and chief operating officer Luc Langevin said: “We’re pleased to innovate with our customers to offer them a variety of high-performance and adaptable isothermal packaging solutions.

“Since 2007, our recycled cardboard meal boxes have been perfected to meet operational and environmental challenges.

“Our expansion plan in the market is rolling out as anticipated, reinforcing our role as a strategic partner that works in close proximity with customers.”

Both announcements form part of the firm’s objective to make 100% of its manufactured packaging recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2030.
