Green packaging and hygiene products maker Cascades has purchased a new printing press, worth $9m, at its Piscataway, New Jersey, corrugated packaging converting facility.

Expected to complete by the end of April 2023, the installation of the new press is anticipated to grow production capacity by 17%, which is equivalent to 480 million ft².

The Piscataway factory, inaugurated in 2018, currently serves the distribution and food processing markets. It is one of Cascades’ newest and most advanced assets with over 175 employees.

Canada-based Cascades said that the latest investment will generate around 20 new jobs for various roles like general helpers, assistant operators, operators and shippers.

Cascades president and CEO Mario Plourde said: “The purchase of an EVOL press, one of the fastest technologies in the world, will allow us to continue our growth in the Northeast and increase our ability to serve our current and future customers.

“This US$9m investment is part of our 2022-2024 strategic plan and is aimed at increasing our integration rate by adding additional converting capacity in the United States.”

Established in 1964, Cascades offers sustainable and value-added packaging, hygiene and recovery solutions using 80 facilities in North America.

Last month, the Canadian firm introduced a new closed eco-friendly basket for freshly produced fruits and vegetables.

Made of recycled and recyclable corrugated cardboard, the new packaging expands Cascades’ collection of environmentally friendly packaging and serves as an alternative to unrecyclable food packaging.
