Cascades, a Canadian company that produces, converts, and markets packaging and tissue products, has unveiled its plans to expand in the isothermal distribution market.

As part of its expansion plans, the company intends to commission a new production site in Tacoma, US as well as launch new products under its northbox brand of insulated boxes for fresh foods.

The new production site, dubbed Cascades Enviropac, will include a new automated line for manufacturing isothermal packaging under the northbox brand.

With advanced automation systems, the operations at the new facility for isothermal packaging will be labour effective, said the company.

Cascades said that the new site will enhance its production capacity and expand its geographic footprint in the isothermal distribution market.

Cascades Specialty Products Group president and chief operating officer Luc Langevin said: “We are pleased to offer the fishing industry an effective alternative to standard polystyrene packaging.

“This solution fits perfectly into our sustainable and recyclable packaging offering. Our investment in Tacoma also confirms our desire to work close to our customers and stay connected to their needs, to remain their partner of choice.”

In addition to the new facility, the company is planning to expand its portfolio of eco-designed northbox OCEAN products.

The northbox OCEAN products are said to be an alternative to non-recycled packaging in the fishing industry. They contain a minimum of 65% recycled fibre and are recyclable.

Cascades claims that its in-house and patented sealing technology will help maintain freshness during the transportation of fresh seafood.

Established in 1964, Cascades offers sustainable solutions for packaging, hygiene and recovery needs. It has around 10,000 employees working across a network of 80 production sites in North America.
