Canadian firm Cascades has introduced a new closed eco-friendly basket for freshly produced fruits and vegetables.

This new packaging, made of recycled and recyclable corrugated cardboard, marks the most recent addition to Cascades’ collection of environmentally friendly packaging and serves as an alternative to unrecyclable food packaging.

According to Cascades, the latest offering was created utilising eco-design principles and adheres to a circular economy philosophy.

The introduction of the basket is expected to help its clients to lessen their environmental impact and meet consumer desire for more environmentally friendly packaging.

The design of the basket enables flat shipping, which lowers transportation costs and the requirement for storage space, Cascades claimed.

Additionally, a mounting jig made for both 2l and 3l basket formats will speed up and streamline production for companies.

The Canadian paper firm added that the basket design will enable the fresh produce brands to stand out on the shelf due to numerous customisation possibilities and high-quality flexographic, lithographic, and digital printing options.

Cascades president and CEO Mario Plourde said: “This new corrugated basket for fresh fruits and vegetables reiterates our commitment to offer innovative products that meet the highest standards of environmental responsibility.

“This launch is also in line with the commitment we made in our Sustainability Action Plan to ensure that 100% of our packaging is recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2030.”

As per the firm, the closed corrugated basket for fresh fruits and vegetables was recently pre-qualified for the How2Recycle programme. It will help the producers to obtain certification.
