Berry Global Group has reached an agreement with recycling services provider PureCycle Technologies to use the latter’s advanced Ultra-Pure Recycled (UPR) resin.

PureCycle provides a patented recycling process that separates colour, odour, and contaminants from plastic waste, and converts it into ultra-pure recycled polypropylene.

The advanced recycling service converts waste plastic into virgin-like plastic while making recycled polypropylene more accessible to companies requiring sustainable, recycled resin.

Under the agreement, PureCycle will supply the material to Berry in 2023. The material will be used for manufacturing at one of Berry’s ISCC PLUS certified facilities to provide superior traceability for the materials.

The agreement is expected to grow Berry’s access to recycled plastics to more than 600 million pounds per annum by 2025.

It represents the latest among Berry’s deals for sourcing advanced recycling material, and the second in North America.

Berry chairman and CEO Tom Salmon said: “Customers look to Berry for unique ways to meet their ambitious sustainability goals.

“Through our access to advanced recycled resin and technical expertise, Berry is a dependable partner for customers in the implementation of sustainable solutions.

“By using our relationships with top suppliers and the latest technologies, we bring our customers premier access to in-demand circular resins.”

In September this year, Berry announced its plans to invest more than $110m to expand its foodservice packaging manufacturing operations in North America.

In the same month, the company joined The Recycling Partnership’s Polypropylene Recycling Coalition to increase the opportunity for recycling polypropylene.
