US-based plastic packaging products maker Berry Global is planning to launch a new food closure that is lightweight and more recyclable.

The new closure is said to save weight and reduce material consumption without impacting the overall performance or user convenience.

Berry Global said that its current 55mm closure is now almost 20% lighter than the prior version and offers a considerable weight saving compared to rival closures available in the market.

The closure can be customised for different neck finishes and specific dispensing requirements of different goods for optimum versatility.

It is suitable for various ketchup and sauces as the valve offers a clean, no-spill dispensing feature.

The closure has an open and star-orifice valve for high-viscosity goods like mayonnaise and a TPE valve that is RecyClass approved as a more recyclable option than a typical silicon version.

Berry Global Consumer Packaging International food market sales director Matthias Hammersen said: “We recognise that customers wish to take every step possible to minimise the environmental impact of their packaging, but crucially this cannot be at the expense of its overall functionality.

“This is particularly true for food packaging, where hygiene, safety and convenience are all part of the overall consumer experience.”

Berry Global claims that the new closure has a robust construction despite its low weight and enhanced recyclability.

Earlier this month, Berry Global and Pylote announced their partnership to introduce a first-to-market ophthalmic multi-dose dropper to help avoid the risk of microbial infections for patients.

Based in Evansville, Indiana, Berry Global has more than 290 facilities across the globe with more than 48,000 employees.

The company’s products include engineered materials, non-woven speciality materials, and consumer packaging.
