Plastic packaging products maker Berry Global has launched a new mortar-shaped pot for Spanish food producer Choví Group’s garlic mayonnaise brand Allioli.

The new pot retains its iconic shape with 25% of recycled polypropylene (PP) content whose quality is the same as virgin material.

It also incorporates sunny yellow colour for maximum brand awareness on-shelf. The ISCC mass balancing technique was used to distribute the recycled content of the packaging. The entire pot can be recycled if proper facilities are available.

Berry Global said that the saving of virgin materials and supporting the reduction in the amount of plastic waste going to landfill will help the move to a circular economy

Chov, Berry and Repsol, the provider of recycled polypropylene, signed a collaboration to enable the shift in material composition of the injection-moulded pot.

All three firms have the ISCC PLUS accreditation, which is necessary to employ recycled materials in food product packaging.

The accreditation ensures credible claims for circular materials, as well as traceability throughout the chain of custody.

Choví industrial director David Moya said: “The process path of developing our iconic Allioli pot to include recycled material has been a long but rewarding road, and the result is excellent.

“It was made possible thanks to our alliance with Berry and Repsol who have been perfect travel companions for us in this pioneering project to increase the sustainability of the Allioli pot.”

The latest collaboration builds upon the strength of the more than 25 years’ partnership between the Choví Group and Berry that will continue to develop packaging solutions for the customers.

Berry Iberia commercial director Ignacio Igea said: “Our partnership with Choví is an example of the kind of relationship that we strive to establish with all our customers every day.

“It involves being innovative and providing state-of-the-art technology, dedicated service and commitment to more sustainable development.”

Last month, Berry Global partnered with skincare company Koa to introduce Body Cleanser & Body Moisturizer bottles and closures made from 100% recycled plastic.
