Barriers are environmentally friendly

BASF Ludwigshafen is offering environmentally compatible, fully recyclable barrier coatings for paper packaging. The polymer dispersions are said to protect packaged goods against water, moisture, oil and grease. According to BASF, they will allow the paper industry to manufacture environmentally friendly paper packaging in competitive production processes.

The first packaging paper coated with the barrier dispersions is now available through paper and board producer Stora Enso. Keith Damarell, Stora Enso’s business development manager, says: “We can coat the polymer dispersions directly on to the paper or board as the BASF’s barrier dispersions can be used in our existing plants.” Wolfgang Hormuth, BASF’s project manager adds: “The barrier dispersion coated paper and board packaging is fully recyclable”.
