Sustainable material solutions and services provider Avient has partnered with Oceanworks to expand the use of recycled ocean plastics.

The partnership will focus on helping customers to integrate recycled ocean plastics into their products.

Recycled ocean and ocean-bound plastics are the products recovered from the ocean, waterways, and ocean-bound collection zones within 50km of a coastline.

Oceanworks founder and president Rob Ianelli said: “As a leading global polymer material formulation expert, Avient will help us to further extend the usage of recycled ocean plastics to speciality formulations and applications.”

Avient and Oceanworks will now work together on an expanded recycled ocean plastics portfolio based on the launch of resound R recycled content thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) created with Oceanworks recycled plastics last year.

The resulting custom-formulated materials, including TPEs and thermoplastics, will be developed using Oceanworks Guaranteed base resins.

Oceanworks will also offer source validation to help brands transparently share the story and impact of these materials.

Avient sustainability vice president Walter Ripple said: “Expanding our collaboration with Oceanworks aligns closely with our sustainability commitments as a formulator and our focus on helping customers meet their sustainability goals.

“Oceanworks maintains the largest global marketplace for recycled ocean plastics and brings knowledge and capability that are invaluable to building this new portfolio.”

Initially, Avient and Oceanworks have connected via the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW). Avient is also a founding member of AEPW.

In April this year, Avient launched its next-generation anti-fog additive, dubbed CESA Nofog Plus, for hot and cold food packaging applications.
