Avery Dennison has launched ultra-small form factor versions of two of its near field communication (NFC) products, AD Circus Mini NTAG213 and AD Microblock ICODE SLIX, for tagging options in the retail, packaging, pharmaceutical and beauty sectors.

The US-based materials science firm said the redesigned inlay versions provide a high-performance solution in retail packaging applications, as space will be premium.

With a measurement of 16mm in diameter, the round format AD Circus Mini NTAG213 is designed for customer experience applications.

With dimensions of 8 x 8mm, the AD Microblock ICODE SLIX is said to be suitable for authentication and brand protection use cases.

Avery Dennison Smartrac atma.io and connected products vice president Max Winograd said: “NFC allows consumers to interact with brands in a way that goes beyond the point of sale, and to provide useful information about a product: what it is made of, how to use and how to recycle it.

“By being able to access this information with just a tap of a phone, it supports a more conscious approach to consumer goods production and consumption.”

The company is providing AD Circus Mini NTAG213 in wet and dry formats, while AD Microblock ICODE SLIX is available in wet format.

Avery believes that the new form factors will add flexibility to its product offerings due to market demand for smaller inlay sizes for expanded and general intelligent packaging applications.

Avery Dennison Smartrac is also planning to launch reduced form factor versions of additional NFC-certified inlays in the future.

In July last year, Avery Dennison agreed to acquire US-based labelling solutions provider Vestcom for $1.45bn in cash.
