Sustainable packaging solutions provider Ardagh Group has announced its plans to establish a global Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Cape Town, South Africa.

The new CoE is intended to provide certain Information technology (IT) services to Ardagh’s businesses in the Americas, Europe and Africa.

Ardagh Group chairman Paul Coulson said: “With world-class technology skills and an established infrastructure Cape Town provides the perfect home for Ardagh’s new Centre of Excellence.

“We look forward to growing our presence to support our global business objectives.”

With the new location, the packaging solution provider seeks to develop skills and grow jobs for South African youth in the growing field of technology.

Following Ardagh’s 2022 acquisition of Consol Glass, which is now known as Ardagh Glass Packaging – Africa, additional investment was made to accommodate the rising demand for sustainable glass packaging in South Africa.

The CoE will play a key role in several investments that will have a good social impact in South Africa, particularly in Cape Town.

Currently, seven production sites are run by Ardagh Glass Packaging – Africa in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ethiopia. These facilities produce a variety of glass packaging for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries.

Ardagh will work along with the City of Cape Town, which will also provide financial support during training.

Additionally, Ardagh will also collaborate with EXL, a data analytics and digital operations company, and CapaCiti as project implementation partners.

Cape Town City Economic Growth Mayoral Committee member Alderman Vos said: “Ardagh Group’s investment and commitment to Africa is noteworthy and inspiring. The City of Cape Town is excited to provide Capetonians with transformative, real-world training and educational experiences.

“This will positively influence our youth by equipping them with key training, education and transportable skills that will enable them to thrive in their future careers.”

Furthermore, the packaging company will work alongside many local charities to give back to the local communities around Cape Town and to support Ardagh’s commitment to the region.
