Aptar Pharma, a division of AptarGroup, has unveiled its first metal-free, multi-dose nasal spray pump, APF Futurity, to deliver nasal saline and other comparable over-the-counter (OTC) formulations.

The firm has designed its first recyclable nasal spray pump with recycling in mind and has received a Class AA certification from cyclos-HTP for recycling streams in Europe.

Aptar Pharma said that APF Futurity is composed of polyolefin materials and does not contain any metal components or other recycling disruptors. It eventually reduces the need for segregation in recycling streams and promotes the quality of recycled materials.

According to the firm, APF Futurity, a component of Aptar Pharma’s Futurity platform for sustainable solutions, meets the rising customer demand for easier access to recyclable goods.

The APF Futurity pump can be conveniently recycled as one piece when used in conjunction with a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP) container bottle, the drug delivery systems maker claimed.

This eliminates the need to separate or detach any parts or materials before disposal.

Aptar Pharma president Gael Touya said: “As a leading provider of nasal spray pumps globally, the launch of APF Futurity is a significant step forward in our sustainability journey, underlining Aptar’s overall commitment to a more circular economy and meeting the global need for sustainable packaging solutions that are easy to recycle.”

Based on the firm’s Advanced Preservative Free (APF) technology platform, the pump was initially designed to administer multi-dose nasal saline and comparable OTC formulations

The metal-free pump, for which patent protection has been sought, enables accurate and consistent dosing with soft actuation, without sacrificing performance or handling, the material science firm added.

Aptar Pharma Consumer Health Care Global Market Development president Stefan Ritsche said: “APF Futurity is a game-changing innovation for the nasal spray pump industry and I am proud of our design and engineering team for meeting the challenge of designing this metal-free nasal pump.”
