US-based AMP Robotics is developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based automation solution, AMP Vortex, to improve the recovery of film and flexible packaging.

The latest first-of-its-kind addition to the company’s portfolio of recycling solutions aims to improve materials recovery facilities (MRF) processing, stimulate end markets and tackle the challenge of film contamination.

AMP Vortex is a flexible and adaptable solution that is initially designed for quality control on fibre lines and targets film contamination. It can be installed as a retrofit solution in a variety of ways to meet varied belt diameters and inclines.

AMP Robotics founder and CEO Matanya Horowitz said: “Innovation and infrastructure improvements are vital to helping MRFs process this challenging, prolific material type and increase recycling rates for residential film and flexible packaging.

“AI is laying the groundwork to reduce the contamination burden on MRFs and scale the recycling of film and flexible packaging.”

End markets for film and flexible packaging have been constrained since it is difficult and expensive to reprocess these materials into basic materials. Vortex aims to target and recover film and flexible packaging for baling and selling, AMP said.

The latest product is a result of AMP’s Customer Innovation Program (CIP), an initiative aimed at working with industry participants to provide fresh AI-enabled automation solutions for the recycling sector.

The firm is also developing several products and performance features for pilot and commercial release, including Vortex to promote greater recycling efficacy and enhanced cost-effectiveness for MRFs and converters.

AMP has already started the pre-release of Vortex to the market and is expected to fully launch the product in 2023

The company is also a member of The Recycling Partnership’s Film and Flexibles Recycling Coalition, part of The Partnership’s Pathway to Circularity Initiative.
