The transaction is anticipated to complement Amcor's current expertise in film and help the company to offer end-to-end packaging solutions, including primary packaging, equipment, on-site technical service, and parts

Packaging solutions provider Amcor has entered into an agreement to buy New Zealand-based automated protein packaging machines manufacturer Moda Systems for an undisclosed price.

The privately-held Moda Systems is engaged in designing, assembling, and supporting high-performance modular vacuum packaging solutions for the poultry, meat, and dairy sectors.

The transaction is anticipated to complement the expertise that the Switzerland-headquartered Amcor has in film. It will help the company to offer end-to-end packaging solutions, including primary packaging, equipment, on-site technical service, and parts.

Amcor flexibles North America (AFNA) president Fred Stephan said: “This acquisition will enable Amcor to offer an exciting new option and choice in automated protein packaging, making us the only flexible packaging manufacturer to own a high-speed, rotary equipment solution for fresh meat.

“Combined with our best-in-class film portfolio, we see great strategic value in adding Moda’s automation technology, and technical expertise and services, for a range of customisable format solutions beyond a standard shrink bag.

“This transaction will enable Amcor to further enhance our winning value proposition for our global protein processing customers.”

The rotating vacuum system from Moda Systems helps protein companies run more efficiently so that they can maximise labour, enhance safety, and cut down waste.

Amcor said that the vacuum system increases throughput and quality and is designed for ease of use in connecting, operating, maintaining, and cleaning.

Additionally, the system is anticipated to further increase the value Amcor offers to protein producers when combined with the firm’s range of meat, seafood, poultry, and cheese shrink packaging solutions.

Moda Systems founder and CEO Richard Newcombe said: “We’re delighted to join forces with Amcor, an industry leader that shares our commitment to innovation and customer service and support.

“Together, we will deliver innovative expertise at scale, with a mutual dedication to outperformance. Our complementary capabilities will accelerate Moda’s founding mission to offer the most advanced vacuum packaging solutions for our customers.”

The deal is expected to be wrapped up in the June 2023 quarter, subject to customary closing conditions.

Last month, Amcor collaborated with Tyson Foods to introduce a new sustainable packaging solution for consumer products.
