Austria-based packaging and recycling company ALPLA Group has acquired iTEC Packaging’s business in Mansfield, UK to expand its presence in the country.

iTEC Packaging specialises in injection moulding, thermoforming, extrusion and compression moulding. Its Mansfield site is engaged in the production of closures mainly for the dairy, food and beverage industries.

According to ALPLA, the deal is expected to help expand its expertise as a packaging system provider in the UK.

Through the acquisition, ALPLA intends to promote the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) material in the closure industry and provides complete solutions with a high recycling content.

By doing this, the business is advancing its work in the processing of recycled high-density polyethene (rHDPE) in the lightweight Eco-Bottle. The bottles utilise 20% less materials in their container sizes, compared to traditional milk vessels.

Other dairy companies are now using the Eco-Bottle, which was created by the packaging and recycling company last year for Arla Foods UK.

ALPLA said that the amount of food-grade rHDPE that can be used in the bottle packaging is up to 40%. This inclusion may increase in the upcoming years with more advancements.

ALPLA UK managing director Jens Seifried said: “With our global know-how, with this acquisition we can increasingly offer the UK dairy industry sustainable, efficient and innovative packaging solutions.”

The addition of the iTEC Packaging plant in Mansfield is expected to enhance the capacity and product range and help secure jobs at the site.

Both parties signed the contractual agreement over the deal on 26 May 2023.

According to the terms of the transaction, ALPLA will retain iTEC’s staff upon completion of the deal. Further terms and conditions of the transaction were not disclosed.

Last month, ALPLA launched its new generation of biodegradable coffee capsules with improved barrier properties for the Blue Circle brand made from organic material.
