Packaging company ALPLA has introduced the latest generation of biodegradable coffee capsules with improved barrier properties for the Blue Circle brand made from organic material.

According to ALPLA, the capsules come with a sealing foil in a certified system to lower the migration of the coffee’s scent into the environment and the effects on the capsule contents.
The Blue Circle capsules provide resource-conserving options to coffee suppliers, wholesalers, filling companies and roasting plants.
The latest offering is injection-moulded using ALPLA facilities and is made as per the established Blue Circle design to optimise the compatibility and handling results.
ALPLA CCO Nicolas Lehner said: “Around the world, consumer behaviour is becoming more and more sustainable. We see ourselves as pioneers and are developing the packaging solutions of the future.
“With the biodegradable coffee capsule, we are not only helping our customers achieve their sustainability targets but are also acting in line with the new EU Packaging Regulation, which will require compostable solutions for individual coffee portion packaging in the future.”
The packaging company said that the entire packaging including sealing foil and contents has received the OK compost HOME and OK compost INDUSTRIAL certification marks from TÜV Austria.
This means that the newly developed, food-contact material can be disposed of through home compost or in the organic waste bin.
Lehner added: “The combination of the material, design and production process is key to the capsules’ stability, leak tightness and barrier. Our technological expertise and experience result in the optimum solution for unadulterated enjoyment.”
Recently, the company unveiled ALPLAindustrial brand to sell its large-volume plastic packaging for industrial and commercial use like buckets, canisters, and their closure systems.
