Supermarket chain Aldi has announced the launch of its new fully recyclable packaging for its own-brand handwash pumps to support its efforts of reducing packaging waste.

According to Aldi, it is the first major UK retailer to incorporate this change in handwash pump packaging.

The supermarket chain has eliminated the glass and metal components from the pumps. The handwash packaging is now claimed as fully recyclable at home.

Aldi anticipates that the change will allow more than 200 tonnes of packaging material a year to be more easily recycled.

Aldi plastics and packaging director Luke Emery said: “Reducing waste is incredibly important to us and our customers, and we will not stop looking for ways to improve our packaging to ensure shoppers know they are making more environmentally friendly choices when buying their everyday products.”

The latest move is intended to support the supermarket’s efforts to lower its environmental impact and create more sustainable packaging alternatives for its products.

Recently, Aldi switched to cardboard packaging for its own-brand porridge pots in a bid to further reduce plastic waste.

The company also introduced a Podback recycling scheme to help customers to recycle their used coffee, tea and hot chocolate pods in December last year.

Under the scheme, Aldi will launch roll out its own-label pods into the Podback scheme, making it the first British supermarket chain to do so.

Aldi plastics and packaging director Richard Gorman said at the time: “We’re pleased to be joining Podback on this journey – especially as the first supermarket member.

“It’s important to us that we help customers do the right thing once our hot drink pods have been used, and we look forward to seeing how our partnership with Podback progresses.”
