Supermarket chain Aldi has decided to ban the sale of disposable barbecues across the UK, as part of its sustainability efforts to safeguard forests and wildlife of the country.

With the latest move, Aldi has become the first supermarket in the UK to impose a ban on disposable barbecues sales.

The ban across all its retail locations will help the supermarket chain eliminate about 35 tonnes of single-use packaging waste.

Aldi UK corporate responsibility director Liz Fox said: “We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment and know that many of our shoppers are increasingly looking to do the same.

“We hope customers can embrace our latest move and still want them to enjoy their summer picnics and barbecues.

“As an alternative, we would encourage customers to opt for more environmentally friendly and sustainable options such as mini portable barbecues, ensuring they are used responsibly.”

Aldi’s ban on disposable barbecues sales is also supported by Natural England, a non-departmental public body responsible for protecting the natural environment.

Natural England people & nature director Amanda Craig said: “We welcome any step that helps people act more responsibly whilst enjoying the countryside, and encourage everyone to follow the Countryside Code when spending time outdoors.

“This includes only using BBQs in places where signs specify they are permitted to better protect people, property and wildlife.”

Previously, Aldi stopped selling disposable barbecues at its Buxton store in June last year.

The supermarket chain said that it is also on track to make all its own-label product packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by the end of this year.
