It is now possible to print a mirror-like metallic finish on a digital press thanks to a development by API Foils.

The technique, developed in collaboration with Inca Digital, Sunjet Inks and MM Digital, enables variability of foiled images within print runs using API dieless application technology to provide a cost-effective solution to the lack of truly shiny metallic effects in digital printing.

API Dieless technology works with a bespoke inkjet print engine allowing the application of metallic foils without the need for heated dies, make-ready materials or printing plates. The PC driven technology addresses the need for a digitally printed metallic effect that is easily integrated into traditional sheet or web-fed print.

“Short runs and variable data are the key benefits of this process,” says Robert Goodfellow, API R & D project leader. “Unique designs, sequential numbering and personal data can be added for the first time in a high gloss metallic or holographic effect.” Multi-variant pack-aging and promotional items are seen as ideal applications.
