Van Genechten Packaging has launched a one-piece cartonboard flower vase which its tests show can hold water for several months without leaking.

Its Florabox is cut and creased conventionally and entirely manually assembled. Van Genechten, which has a UK sales office in Doncaster, can deliver packs flat or ready-assembled.

Account manager Peter Ware explains: “By using contract packers, if necessary, we can fulfil very substantial orders. The idea behind Florabox was to produce a cost-effective, leak-proof board alternative to paper and plastic flower packs which could be printed in up to six colours to celebrate different occasions such as Valentine’s Day.”

Van Genechten is undertaking trials with Interflora in Holland and also plans targeting florists, department stores and internet/mail order retailers.

It currently produces the Florabox from 370g/m2 AssiDoman cartonboard with a 15g/m2 PE outer coating. The inner is a watertight laminate of 17g/m2 aluminium under 200g/m2 PE.

Ware adds: “The real challenge was creating a vase from a single sheet because that was the only way to make the pack leak-proof.”
